    1. Okay, if this were my review, it would be 4 stars, but L didn't like it quite as much as I did. I had learned of a Ukrainian legend about a poor family who wakes up Christmas morning to find that kind spiders have decorated their bare tree with glittering webs. I searched the library for books and found two: this and "Allie the Christmas Spider." Logan liked the latter because it was cuter, but I liked this one because it's like a folktale and has more folk-art style illustrations. This story is [...]

    2. Booklist (September 15, 2001 (Vol. 98, No. 2))Ages 4-8. In this poignant Christmas story set in "old Chicago,"a "humble cobbler"and his family anticipate Christmas by admiring the one memento they saved from their old home in Germany--a box of beautiful glass ornaments. When a fire burns the cobbler's shop and home, the cobbler rescues only the box of ornaments, taking it with him when he resettles the family in a cobweb-strewn shack. Everyone tries to prepare for Christmas, but the cobbler must [...]

    3. This fictional story is about a German family of immigrants in America that lose everything in a fire except the most cherished family heirloom- a box of ornaments brought over from Germany. As they move into a shack, the father realizes he must sell the ornaments in order to provide food for his family. As Christmas approaches and a tree is put up, the children learn they have no ornaments. However, they awaken to find that the spiders also residing in the shack, have spun ornaments onto their [...]

    4. I heard an interview with Odds Bodkin on NPR recently and put all of his books I could find at our local library on hold. Unfortunately, there weren't too many available, but I am sure that we will find more of his stories as we go. I saw this story and knew that it would be a perfect read for the Christmas season. It's a tragic story, full of heartbreak, poverty and sacrifice. But it's also a story of hope, togetherness, and the true meaning of Christmas. We really enjoyed this story and have r [...]

    5. This is a great story to read to kids because it teaches them about another culture, immigration, and the value of family. The Christmas Cobwebs is about a tragedy that happens to an immigrant family from Germany right before Christmas. Their house burns down and they are forced to move. They have to sell the family's beloved ornaments and they are left with a plain tree. As Christmas morning comes around however, they find a great surprise. I like this story because I ;ike the artwork and I thi [...]

    6. This is one of my 8-year-old's favorite books to read at Christmastime. It's heartbreaking that the family's house is ruined in a fire but there's still joy in knowing that the family is safe and they saved their most important treasure, a box full of blown-glass ornaments brought from Germany when they came to America. They make the best of a bad situation.

    7. While this was a cute book, the fact that it had spiders making the ornaments creeped me out. Kind of made me tear up, nonetheless, though. Update 2017: I reread this book to my daughterhad no memory of reading it before, and this time I thought the spiders making the ornament was lovely and sweet! Oh how the times change!

    8. A sweet story about loss, the importance of family above all material things, and simple miracles.

    9. This is sad yet inspiring story about a family that is shown kindness out of the most unexpected place. Wonderful story.

    10. A sad, but beautiful story of Christmas and family and what's truly important in life. Don't let the sad part scare you off, it ends happily. :)

    11. This sweet story has a very important lesson: our family is far more important than our possessions. A great book for little ones. I definitely recommend it.

    12. This is certainly a unique Christmas story and a good candidate for a child who needs to learn that spiders are our friends (though personally I am still not swayed).
