    1. _The Ancient Maya_ by Heather McKillop is a comprehensive and thoroughly researched overview of this Central American civilization, complete with maps, diagrams, photographs, and many pages of references.Organized like a textbook (and I understand it is used as such in some college courses), it is divided into eleven chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction, the author noting some of the evolution in scholarly understanding of the Maya, due to a huge growth in the amount of fieldwor [...]

    2. McKillop sets out her stall well and covers the ground efficiently, but this book is let down by her basic lack of writing ability. The prose is flat and halting, when it needs fluency and bounce to carry the solidly archaeological premise of the book. And it's not just a problem with style: there are a few tangled knots of text which want an editorial machete.[return][return]The other letdown from my perspective was the failure - or rather the lack of any attempt - to bring the Mayan civilizati [...]

    3. Nice to see a new generation of Maya studies emerging. This is a good collection of current theories and recent analyses of discoveries made in the past thirty years of the ongoing Maya historical renaissance.

    4. This book covers a lot of information about the Maya in ancient days, and is pretty interesting to read, as well. It was required reading for a class, but I chose to keep the book for my own library to finish reading what I could not cover in time during the semester.

    5. A real good intro to the Maya. I really like it that its divded into chapters of different areas. Bit wish it listed a chronology of mayan kings of each city
