    1. This was a bit of an introductory once over, lightly. The book is fine as a first text on the main themes of the Gothic, from the late 1700s novels to post-modern film, but it didn't have the depth I was hoping for. Here's to The Late Victorian Gothic: Mental Science, the Uncanny, and Scenes of Writing being more what I'm after.

    2. A very sound academic introduction to the Gothic literary phenomenon, although Botting loses momentum and perhaps judgment once he reaches the twentieth century which he deals with in a rather cursory and slightly negative manner. Nevertheless, 90% of the book is devoted to analysing both the core literary phenomenon and the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries so he can certainly be forgiven. The book should also stimulate the reader to try the original texts and make their own judgments - that [...]

    3. A good general introduction to the gothic genre, from the 18th to the 20th century. The prose is often turgid when dealing with broad currents but frequently catches fire when individual works are being discussed.

    4. This is a sound and comprehensive overview of the Gothic genre. It seems to be intended primarily for undergraduate students, whereas I read it as a general, non-academic reader with a strong interest in the subject. Perhaps for this reason, I initially thought the style rather heavy-going. Once I settled in and got used to it, I found much to enjoy and learn in this book. Botting starts his story with the Graveyard Poets of the early 18th Century who, with their images of death and night, were [...]

    5. Botting shifts the lens of Gothic Criticism to look at Gothic works in a continuous format, rather than simply sticking with the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as so many other critics have done. He has also employed the idea of fear as an educating device, taking on the critics of past years who focused solely on the escapist aspects of Gothic literature. This is a must-read for anyone in the field who wishes to do serious work going forward.

    6. not my usual reading, this short, introductory, historical and thematic work, covers a wide range of cultural sources. this surprises me. in fact, much of my reading, my watching, has been modern descendants of this subgenre. starting from the origins, the specific naming, the rise in the 1790s, the argument here is that it reached damnable popularity in rejection and response to enlightenment theses of rationality. gothic sometimes disputes this, sometimes evades this, eventually absorbs this e [...]

    7. This is a praiseworthy chronological tramp through the gothic and romance genres of the past, ending with a present-day analysis of modern films and novels. The writer remains objective. The gothic genre has received its fair share of criticism, and yet there is so much to celebrate: its sublime settings and themes, subversiveness and its long history of being able to shock and entertain. Allusions are plentiful, so the reading list one can extract from this work is extensive. The only downside [...]

    8. Ok so it's not really fair to say 'finished' with this book. I didn't necessarily read it cover to cover But I read a lot of it. All that was useful for my degree anyhow. This book is proving invaluable in essay writing and forming my own arguments. Simply put, if you are studying a Gothic module, or just a Gothic enthusiast then this is the book for you.5 by 5.^.^

    10. Botting provides an excellent scholarly overview of gothic literature. It is a must read for anyone interested in the genre.

    11. Very good over view of the neo-Gothic period. 17th - 20th centuries. Great footnotes that led me to other studies in the Gothic resurgent arts. Good resource for future.

    12. گوتیک/ فرد باتینگ، ترجمه ی علیرضا پلاسید انتشارات افراز کتاب مناسبیه برای آشنایی ای اولیه با سبک گوتیک

    13. It might end up boring you a little but if you're interested in the genre then you'll have to suck it up.

    14. a fine and reader-friendly introduction (and more) to gothic literature.everyone interested in gothic and horror should take a look into this pieceilliant.

    15. I'm torn between giving it a one based on principle or a four based on (literary) academical achievement. [Full review here: raidinthemoosemaiden.wordpress]
