    1. I love receiving review requests that contain adifferent kind of story. Paul Beaumont's A Brief Eternity is just that: a new, different kind of experience for the reader; it is one that will elevate the mind and make you think.Jerry isn't what you'd call a "believer", but when the Rapture happens and he is whisked away to Heaven, he has his eyes openedd not necessarily in a good way, what with angels uncaring about pregnant women and prophets in Hell.Rachael, his girlfriend, is alive and dealing [...]

    2. At its core, A BRIEF ETERNITY is a story about a forbidden romance between Jerry and Rachel. Jerry has a cynical and sarcastic view on life and his biggest surprise when the Rapture happens is that he’s got a one-way ticket to Heaven. Many of the descriptions are literal interpretations of quotes from the Bible and the result is a version of Heaven that will both fascinate and repulse. It’s an agnostic’s view of Heaven and while technically a paranormal novel, I’d say that this would app [...]

    3. A Brief EternityBy Paul BeaumontPLOTThe Rapture begins on Jerry’s normal, everyday route to work. Jesus swiftly returns to earth to take all the believers with him back to paradise. Jerry soon finds himself transported up in the clouds to live a new life in heaven; however the last thing he witnesses on earth is a heavily pregnant woman holding her hands to her ears waiting for the trumpet to stop, unaware this would haunt and question why she was abandoned by God. After several weeks Jerry di [...]

    4. I would classify this under satirical fiction which is category I enjoy. This did not disappoint. The use of biblical passages liberally sprinkled throughout the book supports constructs made in this universe. Not that I find them terribly believable, but that is by design as it mimics the constructs often spouted by the fringe (fringe really depends on where you live, in some parts of the grand US of A, fringe is fairly mainstream). I was reminded of a time over 25 years ago in college when I w [...]

    5. Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review. It’s very, very rare for me to give a book a 10/10 – this is only the second time that a book that I’ve been sent has managed it, and it’s a first for a work of fiction. But then, this is a very, very good debut novel.Of course, I don’t want to go into the story-line too much for fear of spoilers, but I can tell you that broadly speaking it follows the story of Christ’s second coming, right in the mi [...]

    6. Because of my lifetime conditioning in relation to the Christian Jesus there were times when I felt very uncomfortable, particularly when the author had him swearing using very coarse language - but then the point of the book is to make the reader uncomfortable! This novel is wickedly incisive in its satirical critique of Christian fundamentalist, literalistic readings of the Hebrew and Christian bibles on salvation, heaven, hell and other related matters. Parts of it are laugh-out-loud funny an [...]
